Insomnia / Sleeplessness Remedies
Insomnia or sleeplessness is characterized by lack of sleep, difficulty in sleeping and sleeping for a normal duration of seven to eight hours, at night.
Insomnia Causes:
- Psychological tensions, emotional disturbances and depression.
- Diseases caused by severe damage to any of the vital organs (liver and heart) can alter sleep patterns, causing either disturbed sleep or reversal of sleep (sleeping during the day and keeping awake at night).
- Lack of proper diet and irregular food habits.
- Inability to fall asleep, waking up in the early hours of morning despite sleeping late at night and lack of sound sleep.
- Increased irritability, psychological tension and lack of enthusiasm.
- A feeling of lethargy, loss of appetite and hyperacidity.
Do’s & Don’t :
- Include milk, pure ghee and sugar in meals.
- Take a glass of hot milk with a pinch of pure ghee and sugar, at bedtime.
- Include black grams, wheat, rice, meat and fish in the daily diet.
Insomnia Suggestions:
- Medicated ghee (ghee medicated with Asparagus recemosus (Shatavari)
and Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), in a 10-gm dosage, at bedtime. - Alternately, a cold infusion of herbs likes sweet flag (Vacha) and Centella asiatica (Brahmi) in a 30-ml dosage, at bedtime.
- Massage Castor oil over the scalp and on the soles of the feet (it induces sleep!).
- Use 2-3 nasal drops of medicated oils (Anu Taila) in each nostril, daily, for chronic insomnia.
Herbs Can Be Used :
- A decoction of lettuce seeds, in a 20-ml dosage, at bedtime.
- A decoction of milk with aniseed and honey, in a 30-ml dosage, at bedtime.

Malnutrition Treatment
Malnutrition is caused by either loss of appetite or voluntary reduction in food intake.
Malnutrition Causes:
- Severe loss of appetite due to diseases like tuberculosis, cancers and acute depression.
- Inability to get food due external factors (poverty and famine).
- Diseases like severe hepatitis, severe vomiting (especially during pregnancy), severe gastritis and vomiting due to spasms of internal gastric sphincter.
- Chronic bowel disease leading to non-absorption of food nutrients.
Malnutrition Symptoms:
- Severe weakness, giddiness and loss of appetite.
- Inability to work, walk or get up.
Do’s & Don’t:
- Diet should include heavy and fattening foods (meat, lentils, pulses and fresh vegetables).
- Regular and moderate intake of fats in the form of pure ghee and oils. Diet should include nutrients and proteins to build up immunity.
- Either an infusion of ginger and coriander seeds or pieces of ginger root soaked in lemon juice (good appetizer), before meals.
- Cloves and cinnamon are also effective appetizers.
- A decoction of Sida cordifolia (Bala) in a 30 ml-dosage, daily.
- A paste of embolic myrobalan (amalaki) and sugar in a 10-gms dosage, daily. Powdered Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha).
- Asparagus recemosus (Shatavari) and Sida cordifolia (Bala) in a 2-gms dosage, daily.
- A cold infusion of resins (Drakshasava) in a 15-mldosage, twice, daily (effective appetizer).
Herbs Can Be Used:
- Regular intake of ripe and sweet mangoes, with a glass of milk, helps to gain weight.
- Figs and resins, daily, to gain strength.

Migraine/ Headache Remedy
Migraine/ Headache Definition:
Migraine or Headache is mainly a symptom, and not a separate disease entity, and can be caused by any disorder.
Migraine/ Headache Causes:
- Persons with predominant Pitta are more prone to headaches.
- Even the slightest provocation (like extensive exposure to sunlight, irregular dietary habits, lack of proper sleep and any major change in daily routine) can trigger off a headache.
- Excessive sleep, straining of the eyes or strenuous exercises.
- Diseases like migraine, neuralgia and hyperacidity; major diseases like any abnormal growth in the brain or the membranes surrounding it and any severe injury to the head and skull.
- Suppression of natural urges such as micturition, defecation, yawning, sneezing.
Migraine/ Headache Symptoms:
- Moderate to severe throbbing pain in the head, especially in the temporal and frontal areas.
- Also associated with the symptoms like nausea, vomiting, giddiness, weakness and diarrhea.
Do’s & Don’t:
- Avoid foods (spicy, hot and pungent) that are known to vitiate Pitta Dosha.
- Increase intake of ‘cooling’ foods like fruits, coconut water, green grams and embolic myrobalan and even pure ghee.
Migraine/ Headache Suggestions:
- Local application with either sesame oil with camphor or with a paste of nutmeg prepared in water on the affected area.
- Alternately, a local application of sandalwood paste in rose water for headaches caused by Pitta dosha vitiation.
- For chronic headaches, massage scalp with oils medicated with Eclipta alba (Bhringaraj / Maka).
- Use nasal drops prepared from medicated ghee or oil, once, daily.

Leucoderma/Virtiligo
Leucoderma is presence of whitish or de-pigmented patches on an otherwise normal skin. It is a cosmetic problem and, generally, does not affect any internal organic functions or metabolism.
Leucoderma Causes:
- In most cases, it is idiopathic (specific causative factor cannot be detected).
- Fungal or viral infection.
- Irregular diet and deeds Allergy to specific foods or medicines.
- Heredity, in some cases.
Leucoderma Symptoms:
- Whitish or de-pigmented patches scattered all over the skin.
- The patches are associated with itching, and occasional redness.
- The patches increase in size and in intensity (40-60% of the total body skin is de-pigmented in some cases).
- The condition may lead to malignancy of the melanin, which is the coloring pigment of the skin.
Leucoderma Suggestions:
- Local application of oils extracted from the seeds of Bakuchi. But it should be detoxified and purified before use.
- Powdered purified corals (Rasamanikya) and animal horn (Mrigashrunga) in a 250-mg dosage, thrice, daily.
- A decoction of Rubia cordifolia (Manjishtha) in a 30-ml dosage, twice, daily.
- Generic herbominaral preparations like Maha Tikta Ghrita, Vati and Pancha Tikta Ghrita can be taken, only after consulting an Ayurvedic physician.
- Local application of juice of holy basil and limejuice on the affected area.
- A paste of basil leaves with a clove of garlic should be applied on the affected area.
- A paste of radish seeds in vinegar should be applied on the affected area.
- Juice of the leaves of goosefoot should be applied on the affected area.

Jaundice Treatment
Jaundice is the disorder of the liver caused by any infection of liver cells, due to many causative factors. It is diagnosed by a yellowish staining of the eyes and skin.
Jaundice Causes:
- Irregular diet (either intake of unhygienic and stale food or excessive intake of oily, spicy and pungent foods).
- Spread of viral infections, which cause jaundice, through blood and use of infected blades, syringes and needles.
Jaundice Symptoms:
- Yellowish staining of the eyes and skin.
- Discoloration of urine from light yellow to very dark yellow to even reddish yellow.
- In cholistatic jaundice, stools turn whitish, but urine remains unchanged.
- Loss of appetite, associated with nausea and vomiting.
- Pain in the abdomen due to enlargement of liver and spleen.
- Anemia and weakness.
Do’s & Don’t :
- Diet should include boiled rice, lentils and buttermilk, with a pinch of asafetida, rock salt and powdered cumin seeds.
- A cold infusion of Vetiver grass, powdered ginger and sandalwood in place of plain drinking water.
- Avoid fried, pungent, oily and spicy foods.
- Stick to a diet that includes hot vegetable soups, juice of green grams and rice porridge, with a dash of black pepper and ginger powder.
- Avoid unhygienic and contaminated food.
Suggestions:
- Fresh juice of Phyllanthus niruri (Bhumi amalaki) in a 30-ml dosage, thrice, daily.
- A decoction of Kalmegh (Bhunimba), leadwort and three myrobalans in a 30-ml dosage, thrice, daily.
- Tablets prepared from Picrorrhiza curroa (Kutki) and gum guggul (Komiphora mukul) in a 250-mg dosage, thrice, daily.
- Either tablet made from tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi) in a 1-gm dosage or fresh juice of tinospora in a 30-ml dosage, thrice, daily.
Jaundice Treatment:
- Two-to-three nasal drops made with the juice of bitter luffa.
- Juice of radish leaves in a 50-ml dosage, thrice, daily.
- The paste of the bark of Berberis vultaris (jaundice berry), in a 1-gm dosage, thrice, daily.
- Sugarcane juice mixed with limejuice, in 30-ml dosage.

Urinary Tract Infections
Urinary tract infections are generally bacterial or viral infections and can affect any organ in the urinary system, right from kidneys to the bladder.
Causes:
- Retention of urine by suppressing the urge to micturate.
- Drinking less amount of water, which generally concentrates urine and precipitates infection?
- Lack of proper hygiene, especially in females, which precipitates infection due to short length of urethra.
- Presence of stone in the kidneys or bladder.
Symptoms:
- High fever, accompanied by shivering, especially in the evenings. Burning sensation and pain while passing urine.
- Passing of infected urine, such as turbid or blood stained, due to presence of pus cells or excess proteins.
- Associated with moderate backache.
- Increased frequency of micturition, with a feeling of incomplete evacuation of bladder.
Do’s & Don’t:
- Include a lot of water and fluids in regular diet to keep the urinary system absolutely flushed out.
- Take hot lentil soups and pulses regularly.
- Take rice porridge with medicated pure ghee (with less salt as it causes sodium and water retention). Avoid irregular meals.
- Cold infusion of coriander seeds in a 30-ml dosage, thrice, daily. Infusion or decoction of the fruit of punctured vine (Gokshur) in a 30-ml dosage, thrice, daily, to facilitate the excretion of stagnant urine from bladder.
- Coconut water is an excellent diuretic and should be taken every day to enhance urine production and flush out urine.
- A decoction of Boerhaavia diffusa (Punarnava) is good diuretic and is recommended in a 30-ml dosage, thrice, daily.
