Malnutrition Definition:

Malnutrition is caused by either loss of appetite or voluntary reduction in food intake.

Malnutrition Causes:

  • Severe loss of appetite due to diseases like tuberculosis, cancers and acute depression.
  • Inability to get food due external factors (poverty and famine).
  • Diseases like severe hepatitis, severe vomiting (especially during pregnancy), severe gastritis and vomiting due to spasms of internal gastric sphincter.
  • Chronic bowel disease leading to non-absorption of food nutrients.

Malnutrition Symptoms:

  • Severe weakness, giddiness and loss of appetite.
  • Inability to work, walk or get up.

Do’s & Don’t:

  • Diet should include heavy and fattening foods (meat, lentils, pulses and fresh vegetables).
  • Regular and moderate intake of fats in the form of pure ghee and oils. Diet should include nutrients and proteins to build up immunity.
  • Either an infusion of ginger and coriander seeds or pieces of ginger root soaked in lemon juice (good appetizer), before meals.
  • Cloves and cinnamon are also effective appetizers.

Malnutrition Suggestions:

  • A decoction of Sida cordifolia (Bala) in a 30 ml-dosage, daily.
  • A paste of embolic myrobalan (amalaki) and sugar in a 10-gms dosage, daily. Powdered Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha).
  • Asparagus recemosus (Shatavari) and Sida cordifolia (Bala) in a 2-gms dosage, daily.
  • A cold infusion of resins (Drakshasava) in a 15-mldosage, twice, daily (effective appetizer).

Herbs Can Be Used:

  • Regular intake of ripe and sweet mangoes, with a glass of milk, helps to gain weight.
  • Figs and resins, daily, to gain strength.
